With the right to choose an abortion hanging in the balance, emotional protesters rallied outside the nation’s highest court, as justices inside sharply questioned solicitors on Wednesday. After two hours of contentious argument, analysts believe the court’s new conservative majority seemed poised to not just uphold Mississippi’s law banning abortion after 15 weeks but possibly ready to overturn Roe v. Wade entirely, precipitating a seismic shift in America’s cultural landscape. The result, one legal analyst says: “We become a country where every single state gets to make its own decision about whether abortion is legal and acceptable in their state.” It’s why New Jersey abortion advocates are pushing for the lame-duck legislature to pass a bill that would codify reproductive rights here, where abortion is legal but only upheld by case law.
