Supreme Court’s refusal to block Texas anti-abortion law dismays NJ advocates

Abortion rights advocates in New Jersey watched in dismay as the U.S. Supreme Court refused to stop a law from taking effect in Texas that bans all abortions, with no exceptions, after six weeks. Anti-abortion group Family Policy Alliance said in a statement “it’s a great day for human rights and babies in the womb. We support these common sense regulations to protect lives.” But others argue the law is unconstitutional, given the precedent of Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey.

Lawmakers in New Jersey have been debating a bill, the Reproductive Freedom Act, which would codify the right to abortion in state law. A spokesperson for Assemby Speaker Craig Coughlin said that bill “remains under consideration.”
